For over a decade, Judith Owen has become one of the most respected artists on the jazz scene. Originally from Wales and now based in the USA, she brings together a style that is both powerful yet balanced with emotion and passion. Her latest album, Suit Yourself, is a true classic, so it was great for the sold-out audience at Bush Hall to be treated to a two-set journey through this wonderful collection of jazz songs, including her latest single, To Your Door. From “Satchel” to “Real Gone Guy,” and then from the second-set opener “Blueskies” to the finale of her rendition of Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff,” the night truly flew by.
Her band were totally tight, which you would expect from some of the best jazz exponents around, but with Judith leading the way, they weaved a tapestry of upbeat grooves and piano ballads, allowing Owen, in between songs, to be the natural maître d’ for the evening. She told tales from her past, spotted audience members she could bounce off for impromptu chats, but never lost focus on the show’s timing and balance.
The Hall’s seated setup worked very well for Judith, allowing her to get intimate and then break out and swing, which it feels is what she loves doing most. The crowd clearly enjoyed themselves and, after the best part of two hours, it was apparent Judith and her band had too. Bush Hall was the perfect backdrop for a perfect performance.
